I know it's only the beginning of the season and everything, but I'm not sure if I'm just stunned and surprised, or if I'm a little disappointed with how this season has begun.
Let me elaborate.
There was a lot of hype around certain teams and players this offseason. For example, a lot of the sports news shows I have been watching all Winter have been talking about how amazing the Detroit Tigers would be this year. They've become a kind of favorite to win this year. But if this first series is indicative of how there season will be, I'm not impressed. So much hype surrounded Miguel Cabrera's arrival there, and so far his numbers have been less than stellar. In fact, as a team, they've been as a whole less than stellar. I guess the real test will come when Dontrelle makes his first start against AL hitters, particularly the DHers. So far, their 0-2 last place record, especially to a fairly no-name Kansas City team.... eesh.
The Phillies' performance hasn't been very impressive, either. They, like the Tigers, are also 0-2 and in last place. And also to a fairly underrated team, the Washington Nationals (who I might add have been fairly impressive so far). They had also been talked about quite a bit this off season, and so far have not lived up to the hype.
If nothing changes for either team over the season, and this is indicative of what they'll be playing like, I can't see how either team will make it. And after all that hype. And I say all this to show that you cannot possibly base how well a team will do during the season on 1) Spring Training, 2) team history, and 3) one or two players picked up in trade that are supposed to miraculously make everything on the team better. Which, I might add, DOESN'T HAPPEN.
There are some players that haven't been all that impressive either. But there are some that have, and these are players that don't get much publicity. Everyone has been giving the Dodgers a hard time about needing a power third basemen. On Opening Day, before the game started, analyst thought they were being witty and cunning by saying the Dodgers may need Torre to play at third. But so far, that new guy, DeWitt, not disappointing. He's been hitting, making the plays, and starting the rallies. I can't see why they'd worry about third base at this point. Sure, he isn't a power hitter, but has anyone been complaining about Figgins lately? Not too much. I don't think third base just has to be some power hitter. I never understood the point of that. I mean, look at A-Rod. The best hitter in the game... and what has it done for the Yankees? One power bat, and the best power bat at that, sure hasn't helped them yet. But granted, that's over simplification of a problem, and I'm sure there are other internal issues within that ball club. But still. ONE PLAYER CANNOT FIX AN ENTIRE TEAM.
Wow, I'm rambling tonight. I guess I can't watch TV and do this at the same time. Focus, Stacy, FOCUS.
I'll talk about tonight's game after tomorrow's day game. I can't wait to watch it.
Man, I love baseball!
